TV talk show beckons

The local television airwaves will soon welcome a new television talk show, Breaking The Limits, which is set to premiere before the end of this month, according to producers.

The reality show is a brainchild of local R ‘n’ B duo of Bleek Chindime and Thokozani Mapemba who said they have attempted to fuse a musical element into a narrative that will try to address social issues bordering on gender-based violence (GBV) in a more creative way.

Brains behind the talk show: Bleek and Mapemba

Chindime said: “We are a society that is beset by different challenges, but through this platform we are trying to show people that we can change some of the predicaments by taking deliberate efforts.”

So far, 12 episodes of the TV series have been produced and they have been earmarked to start airing by the end of the month on three television stations namely Zodiak, Times TV and Rainbow TV.

Meanwhile, the trailer of the show’s first theme song Ego has been released and it features interviews with some of the country’s voices such as Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati and activist Beatrice Mateyo, among others.

Chindime said most of the local shows have fallen short in terms of creativity which has resulted in people preferring to watch foreign content. He said that is one area that they want to address so that their show retains a strong pull factor.

Mapemba said: “I saw an opportunity that can capture issues with a higher level of creativity. As a duo, we produce music that targets an elite audience and we saw this is an opportunity to reach out to that audience in a mindset change drive.”

He said that most people, even the educated ones, who are running gender themed programmes are victims of GBV and they want to provoke a debate that will also bring on board the fate of such kind of people.

“We intend also to examine why men stay quiet in the face of serious GBV violations that they face. This is a problem that has not spared any gender; hence, making our target wide,” he said.

The Legends duo said being musicians, they also want to use the platform to creatively challenge artists in Malawi to come up with music that can fit into the narrative of the talk show.

The producers are running the project using their own funds thus far, but they are appealing to partners who are willing to come on board to work with them.
