Woman And Three Children Swept Off away In Car By Raging River

SA – On Monday night, a female and three minors in a vehicle were allegedly swept off a bridge in Flamingo Heights, Tongaat, KZN.

Two people were killed in eThekwini Metro wards 47 (KwaMashu) and 87 (uMlazi) on Monday, with two others missing after their car was swept away in Molweni.

Heavy rains wreaked havoc across most of KZN. Flooding and mudslides forced many residents to flee their homes.

Residents witnessed an orange Toyota Auris being swept away, prompting Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics to respond to a call for assistance.

“A female with three minor children were allegedly in the vehicle. The river burst its banks following heavy rainfall in KZN.

“Motorists are urged not to travel unnecessarily due to roads being flooded. Reaction Officers have attended to nearly 175 calls of flooding this afternoon. The RUSA Helicopter was unable to lift off and assist with any rescue operations due to zero visibility.”

On Monday, April 11, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an orange level 5 warning. The warning stated that widespread showers and rain were expected in the eastern parts of KZN.

“Significant amounts of rainfall already observed in areas along the coast and reports of flooding on the roads,” said the weather service.
