Tap water excites Mchinji community

Communities in group village head Wirima in Traditional Authority (T/A) Gumba in Mchinji District have expressed excitement with the installation of piped water in the area.

Speaking on Wednesday when Source of Life Children Foundation handed over a solar-powered water system to the village, a community member, Stella Grey, said previously they used to drink water from a stream and wells.

“However, water from the shallow wells is not safe for consumption. I am pleased to access piped water,” she said.

T/A Gumba said clean water was crucial, especially for children who are susceptible to waterborne diseases.

“I urge my subjects to take care of the facility so that it can serve people for many years,” she said.

Gumba Health Centre senior disease control and surveillance officer Allan Banda said there was one borehole in the area.

“Community members and guardians from the hospital were struggling to access water from the borehole, which forced many to turn to unsafe sources,” he said.

Source of Life Children Foundation country representative Innocent Semu said they installed the water system because the area had no potable water facilities.

“Access to safe water has been a challenge for the people over the past 50 years and they were forced to get it from wells where they also shared with animals,” he said.

Source of Life Children Foundation is a child-focused organisation and, apart from water and sanitation, the organisation implements projects on climate change, education, women empowerment and permaculture.
