Police officer handed 30 years jail sentence for raping poly student

High Court Judge Vikochi Chima has sentenced former police officer Andrew Chagaga to 30 years imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl.

He committed the crime in December 2020 while serving as a police officer at Limbe Police Station.

Since his conviction early last year, Chagaga has been on remand at Chichiri prison awaiting sentencing.

The case was committed to the High Court after the State prayed for a stiffer punishment and that Chagaga should be given a sentence of not less than 42 years considering the sentencing trends in sexual offences.
