Mzuzu MP in sanitation drive

Mzuzu City legislator Bennex Mwamlima (Malawi Congress Party) has launched a door-to-door clean-up campaign in his constituency.

Speaking on Tuesday when he launched the project, Mwamlima  bemoaned poor waste management in the city.

However, he blamed Mzuzu City Council secretariat for the situation.

Mwamlima: The city is untidy

“The city is untidy. I feel sad that the council secretariat is sleeping on its job to ensure that the city is clean,” said Mwamlima.

He asked residents to refrain from dumping refuse anywhere to keep the city clean.

But Mzuzu City Council spokesperson McDonald Gondwe said the council is facing financial challenges to operate effectively.

“That is why we have engaged the central government to bail us out with K2 billion to settle debts so that we can improve service delivery,” he said.

On his part, Chiputula bloc leader Emmanuel Msiska said poor sanitation can result in waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea.

“I urge my fellow residents to keep their surroundings clean to create a good living environment,” he said.

In 2020, Vice-President Saulos Chilima reprimanded the council for failing to remove garbage from the city.
