Minister focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 6 mark

BANDE—There is a lot that needs to be done

Newly appointed Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation John Bande has committed to work towards helping the country attain Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 which is aimed at ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The goal seeks to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation for all, focusing on the sustainable management of water resources, waste water and ecosystems, and acknowledging the importance of an enabling environment.

Bande said he would use his expertise to help improve the water and sanitation situation in the country.

“I would like to thank the President for appointing me as a member of his Cabinet. I pledge my full support to the President and commit myself to Malawians by making sure that the water and sanitation situation in the country has improved,” he said.

He committed to working with the line minister, Abida Mia, in addressing challenges noted in the recent National Statistical Office survey on Multiple Indicator Cluster which noted that 60 percent of the country’s water sources are contaminated.

Bande further noted the findings in the recently released Afro Barometer survey on water and sanitation, which found that about 98 percent of the country’s population lives in areas without sewer systems.

“There is a lot that needs to be done and we will strive to do better and bring back the lost glory of the Kamuzu era, when every household had pit latrines and rubbish pits in their backyard,” he said.

Bande has served in Cabinet in various portfolios before.
