MBTS Honours Individual Donors, Schools

Blantyre, Mana: Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS) has awarded 13 blood donors, three schools and one traditional authority with certificates and trophies for being long time donors as well as for having highest number of donations.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony over the weekend in Blantyre, Chairperson for MBTS, Alick Chapola said he was pleased with people’s response to the call for blood donation; hence, setting a day to thank donors for donating blood selflessly.

“MBTS would like to encourage all citizens to donate blood after looking at the donors that received awards today,” said Chapola.

Chapola also expressed gratitude to schools, saying they are the biggest donors of blood.

“I would also like to commend community leaders and individuals that put up efforts when donating blood,” he said.

Chapola, however, said MBTS needs to collect 90,000 units of blood, noting that for the the past years they have not been able to reach their targets.

“However, we are glad to announce that this year we’re towards reaching our goals.

“Myths are there to manipulate people but MBTS collects the blood, tests and packages it for delivery, if the donor has health problems it gives the donor a chance to seek help instantly,” Chapola said.

Chapola, therefore, pleaded with hospitals to fulfill their contributions towards MBTS costs considering that MBTS delivers blood to health facilities on trust that they will honour their bills.

Blantyre City Council Mayor, Wild Ndipo who graced the event as guest of honour, committed to spread the message throughout the city of Blantyre to make sure that people donate blood.

“Saving lives is not only a doctor’s job, there is need for individuals to donate blood. When we donate blood it helps pregnant women in maternity wards, people involved in accidents and people born with hemorrhoids as well as people with anemia,” said Ndipo.
