Yesterday Malawians on social media were shocked to hear that a prisoner at Zomba Maximum Prison has been found with two phones in his stomach.

Everyone was wondering how he got the phones inside, after sometime, Malawi Prisons Chief Inspectorate Justice Ken Manda dismissed the claims according to him the incident happened in India.

On the other hand National Spokesperson for the Malawi Prisons Service Chimwemwe Shaba confirmed that the prisoner was sent to Zomba Central for treatment.

Later, one of the country’s media houses managed to interview the prisoner who confirmed to have inserted the phones through his anus.

According to him he was given the phones by one of the prison officers narrating tha one of the phones was meant for another prisoner and the other one was supposed to be sold inside the prison.

When asked how he managed to insert the phones through the anus, the inmate said he was told to put the phones inside a plastic bag and use oil as a lubricant for easy penetration.

However when he got inside he failed to discrete them hence a call for help and was sent to the hospital for further treatment.

Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) Director, Dr. Saulos Nyirenda while confirming that they received the case of the prisoner at the hospital said that the prisoner has now managed to discrete the phones and he is receiving other treatment

He also clarified that the phones were actually in his intestines and not in his stomach as earlier indicated.

Following the scandal, prison authorities at the facility conducted a mass sweeping exercise in which they managed to confiscate 450 handsets.
