Kwera Education Fund on Thursday donated 160 laptops to needy students  at Bunda Campus of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) to help them in their studies.

Kwera board member James Phiri, who was accompanied at the ceremony by chief operating officer Chimwemwe Kamwendo, said his organisation is committed to seeing education standard improve in the country.

Phiri said: “Kwera’s vision is about helping communities and Malawi to develop. We finance higher education. This can be achieved if the community has highly educated people.

“We help students with fees and also gadgets as these help them in their education. Today we are donating 160 laptops to help these students in their studies.”

The laptops were sourced from European companies for free and Scan Logistics shipped them to Malawi also for free.

Luanar students’ affairs director Ronnie Mvula expressed gratitude for the donation.

He said the college has many students coming from economically challenged homes who cannot afford laptops.

“The need for laptops is huge here in all the faculties. We have computer laboratories, but we have 5 000 students and the computers are not enough. We really are grateful to Kwera for coming to our aid. We need more and ask more organisations to help us. Most of our students are from economically-challenged families,” he said.
