Judiciary honours Twea

Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda has praised retired Justice of Appeal Edward Twea for his contribution towards child justice in the country.

Twea, who served the Judiciary for 40 years, was among four justices of Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal who retired last year. The others are former Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda, Dunstain Mwaungulu and Anaclet Chipeta.

Twea: I am grateful for
the recognition

Mzikamanda expressed his sentiments on Wednesday evening during a farewell function at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe where the Child Justice Forum awarded Twea a medal and certificate.

He said Twea will be remembered as a distinguished judicial officer who worked with passion, integrity and commitment.

“Justice Twea has done a lot in 40 years in the judiciary and also in the Child Justice sector where he has left a lot of paperwork, which has improved the section,” said Mzikamanda.

Child Case Review Board chairperson Justice Ruth Chinangwa said the child protection sector in general and the child justice sub-sector has achieved many things owing to the wisdom of the retired justice.

She said: “Honourable Justice Twea is the longest serving judge and the only one to have overseen the transition from the board of visitors to Child Case Review Board.

“Through the wisdom of the outgoing chairperson, the approach for Child Justice Court was also revisited and adopted a multi-disciplinary approach.”

Twea said he was grateful for the recognition. He thanked the office of Chief Justice for giving him an assignment to lead the Child Justice reform.

Twea was born on April 8 1956 and was first appointed to service as State advocate on July 31 1978.

He was later appointed senior resident magistrate in 1980 and ascended to the rank of principal resident magistrate in 1984.

He also served in a number of law commissions, including The Special Law Commission for the Child Care, Protection and Justice Act, the Special Law Commission Review of Tradition and Justice Act.
