Habitat for Humanity has supported 350 households affected by tropical storms Ana and Gombe in Chikwawa District with materials to construct temporary shelters.

The materials included tents, blankets, handsaw, mats, hoes, shovels and pangas.

Speaking on Monday after the donation, Habitat for Humanity Malawi national director Anock Kapira said they wanted to help the survivors to have shelters after leaving evacuation camps.

“In evacuation camps people are prone to hazards such as the disease outbreaks and disruption of normal life. We hope the materials will offer them a starting point,” he said.

Chikwawa District Council chief administrative officer Reynard Mchombo said they are buying land in the upland to relocate the victims.

He said: “The survivors have been at the camp for over six months and they need to go back home to continue with life.

“As a council, we are pleased that the temporary shelter kits will enable them to start a new life where they are relocating.”

Village civil protection committee chairperson Watson Solobala said they have not received relief food items for about five months.

“Life is tough without food as some people are failing to find piecework to support their families,” he said.
