Driver disappears with K7.5 million company money in Lilongwe

A manhunt is currently underway in Lilongwe for a man who has reportedly absconded with company funds amounting to K7.5 million.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Nelson Swalesi, worked as a driver at Office World Company, and vanished with the money after officially withdrawing it from a bank in Area 3 in the Capital City on February 22, 2023.

According to the Lilongwe Police, the suspect accompanied the accounts assistant to the bank to withdraw money for the company.

However, during the transaction, the accounts assistant realized that he had left his identity card (ID) behind and used the driver’s ID instead. While waiting to be served, the bank teller called out Swalesi as the owner of the ID used in the transaction to collect the money.

Taking advantage of the confusion, Swalesi collected the money and fled the scene. The accounts assistant was unaware of what had transpired until it was too late, and the money was nowhere to be found.

Upon realizing the situation, the company immediately reported the incident to the Lilongwe Police.

Lilongwe police publicist Hastings Chigalu stated that the police are currently conducting an intensive search for the suspect, and they have urged members of the public to provide any information that may lead to his arrest.
