Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has accused Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara of being behind Leader of Opposition (LoP) saga.

The accusations follow today incident where the newly appointed leader of opposition Dr. George Chaponda was denied access to attend the business committee of Parliament after Kondwani Nankhumwa obtained an injunction against his firing.

writing on his official facebook page Chimbanga said: “The actions of the Speaker Gotani Hara can only be translated as a blatant attack on our democracy. She wants to turn Parliament into a one party system.

“Their stooge Nankhumwa is not a member of any opposition party, therefore he cannot be Leader of the opposition. Malawians must resist this abuse of power.”

Nankhumwa and other senior members were expelled from DPP for leading an ‘illegal’ National Governing Council meeting in Lilongwe on December 6, 2023 at Golden Peacock Hotel.
