First grade magistrate court in Chiradzulu has convicted and sentenced Emmanuel Bandawe 41, to pay a fine of 1.8 Million kwacha or spend 15 months in jail for causing death of 3 people and injuring 9 others due to reckless driving.
The court trough the prosecutor from Chiradzulu police station heard that the accident occurred on April 22, 2024 at Kanje turn off near Nguludi Engen filling station.
The prosecutor said the convict was driving a Toyota Hilux double cabin MZ 6290 from Bangwe to Nkando and upon reaching Nkando he hit a male motorcyclist identified as Brian Mkwamba, 16 and the driver swayed o the other side of the road and hit a woman and her child and other 4 pedestrians who were standing by the offside verge of the road.
Upon arrival to St. Joseph Mission Hospital the mother and the baby died, later on Peter Maluwa also died while receiving treatment.
The driver and his 4 passangers had some minor injuries while the motor cyclist had serious injury.
Delivering his sentence, First Grade Magistrate Smart Maluwasa sentenced Bandawe to pay 200 000 Kwacha for each of the 3 deaths and 150 000 for each of the nine injured persons totalling to 1.8 Million Kwacha.
