Chaos in LL as motorist kills 2 pupils

Hell broke loose on Friday on the Lilongwe City West Bypass Road after unidentified motorist killed two pupils in a hit-and-run accident.

In retaliation, pupils from Chisiyo Primary School alongside irate community members barricaded the road with burning tyres and stones while others pelted unsuspecting motorists with stones for about two hours.

According to witnesses, the fracas started after the school committee declared that every pupil should annually pay K1 000 as development fees.

Riled with the decision, the pupils mounted a protest which included blocking the nearby bypass road.

When Nation on Sunday arrived at the school, it was deserted after police had dispersed the protesters with tear gas.

We could not independently confirm if indeed the proposed development fees was the bone of contention.

During the protest, a motorist hit and killed two pupils, which fuelled more tension.

The two bodies lay in a pool of blood for some time before they were moved away.

According to Lilongwe Police Station publicist Hastings Chigaru, officers received information about the incident around 11am.

He said: “When the Lilongwe Zone One patrol team arrived at the place, they found two boys, one identified as Kelvin Mbewu, a Standard Three learner, and the other who is yet to be identified, were helplessly lying on the road after being hit by an unknown motor vehicle.”

The victims were immediately taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
