Chakwera speaks out on his political future

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has come out of his cocoon to declare interest as Malawi Congress Party (MCP) torchbearer in the 2025 polls.

Chakwera declared his interest during the Kamuzu Day celebrations held at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial capital Blantyre yesterday.

In his speech, Chakwera said the Tonse Alliance is here to stay.

“In October next year, I will be continuing with development projects which my administration has been implementing,” said Chakwera while attracting ululations from party supporters who attended the celebration.

Many people described Chakwera’s declaration was a direct response to former President Peter Mutharika who is also leader of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who said Chakwera’s time is up.

Chakwera is scheduled to face Mutharika, Kondwani Nankhumwa of PDP and Dr. Sally Kumwenda at the polls set for September next year.
