Enlightened Christian Gathering leader Prophet Shepherd Bushiri on Thursday launched the first phase of a relief and rehabilitation programme at Chambe Primary School in Mulanje.
The programme, which Bushiri and his wife Mary describe as “a complete package”, will see over 4 000 households that have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Ana in Mulanje, Thyolo and Zomba districts receiving a relief package to set them on the recovery path.

Speaking during the launch of the programme, Bushiri said after visiting the affected areas, they saw the need for food, temporary shelter and sanitation items.
“We preach in words and in deeds. It’s not easy to give out when you do not have the love of God in your heart,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Senior Chief Mkanda thanked the Bushiris for the support.
The traditional leader asked them to continue supporting the area as the extreme weather left the community lacking in many areas.
“We had piped water but all the pipes have been washed away. We have now reverted to unprotected water sources,” she said adding that there is fear that the situation may lead to waterborne disease outbreaks such as cholera.
Bushiri pledged that he will support the rehabilitation of the water system.
Mulanje district commissioner Stallichi Mwambiwa thanked Bushiri for the quick response.
“It was just two days ago when Prophetess Bushiri visited us to appreciate how Mulanje District has been affected. Here they are today together with the Prophet to provide support to the disaster victims,” he said.
The programme is providing each beneficiary with a bag of maize, a roll of plastic sheeting, a bucket, sugar and soya pieces.
Over 18 000 people were affected by Tropical Cyclone Ana in Mulanje.
