The Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) has said it has bought 150,000 metric tonnes (MT) of maize against the targeted 200,000 mt.

In an interview, Admarc spokesperson Agnes Ndovie said although their markets are still open in the Central and Northern regions, it is doubtful to procure the remaining tonnage.

She indicated that the parastatal closed all markets in the Southern Region for the purchases as there is no traffic from farmers coming to sell the commodity.

“At the moment, we are buying maize from commercial farmers in central and northern Malawi. These are the areas which seem to have some maize in stock.

“Currently Admarc has surplus maize in stock from the 2019-20 growing season, which means the country has enough maize in stock,” Ndovie said.

She said people are encouraged to go and buy maize at their nearest Admarc markets as they never stopped selling maize.

Ndovie said the maize is being sold at K205 per kilogramme (Kg) and an individual can only buy up to 50 kg.

Agriculture expert Tamani Nkhono Mvula said Admarc has made progress in the purchase of maize.

“Getting to 150,000 metric tonnes is no mean achievement for Admarc ,” Mvula said.
