BIZIWIKI—This will boost revenue

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it has collected over K181 million through its Block Management System since its introduction last month.

MRA Commissioner General John Biziwiki said this during the launch of the Block Management System in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

Block Management System (BMS) is a taxpayer outreach scheme that physically identifies and maps taxpayers and breaks them down into manageable blocks to allow MRA officials to visit them in person to educate and encourage them on tax compliance.

“The Block System is very important as it will help boost revenue collection. The system, which has been launched in Lilongwe, will have blocks at Bwalo la Njobvu, Malangalanga, Area 3, Kanengo and City Centre,” Biziwiki said.

A representative of Lilongwe business community Thawero Makako said they were supporting the system and urged MRA to sensitise tax payers to the same.

He took advantage of the event to ask MRA to reduce prices of EDF machines.

“We are asking MRA to consider reducing or giving the business community EDF machines free of charge because we use the machines on its behalf,” Makako said.

Lilongwe City Mayor Richard Banda urged the business community in the city to comply with tax payment rules.

He said the purpose of the block system is to identify clients who are paying tax and also facilitate easy payment of taxes.

MRA is in the process of introducing Msonkho Online Registration which will enable taxpayers to register taxes online.
