Nsanje Council hails goat pass on project

Nsanje principal agriculture officer Whyghtone Fole has commended The Hunger Project for distributing goats to communities in Traditional Authority Ngabu in the district.

He said this on Monday when the first cohort of beneficiaries handed over the goats to the second cohort.

Fole said the goats will help address malnutrition issues in the district as pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers will get milk and meat for their children.

“We thank The Hunger Project for teaching people to have backyard gardens to grow vegetables to ensure that they consume six food groups,” he said.

Group village head Kanyama thanked The Hunger Project for also encouraging community members to have toilets with hand washing facilities and using energy saving stoves.

One of the beneficiaries, Ireen Mtenda said she never dreamed of rearing goats in her life.

“Now I have five goats. I will take care of them so they can multiply,” she said.

Nsanje district principal HIV and Aids and nutrition officer Nozza Chingola Mpesi said the initiative will address the district’s stunting level which is at 32 percent.

The Hunger Project is implementing a five-year Scaling Up Nutrition Project targeting pregnant and breastfeeding mothers with funding from German Bank KFW through Unicef.
