About 1 600 people affected by rainstorms in Dedza District have commended the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) and Darussunnah Foundation for supporting them with food and non-food relief items. 

Speaking on Saturday at Dedza Boma during the handover donation, Yunusu Rajab from Linthipe in the district said rainstorms in January this year destroyed some of his properties.

“The disaster affected my livelihood, but with the donation, I will be able to look for resources to get back to my feet,” he said.

Another beneficiary, Umi Akidu from Dedza Airfield, said it will take long for people to recover from their loss because the damage was huge.

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, who was the guest of honour, thanked Darussunnah Foundation and MAM for complementing government’s efforts to reach out to people affected by rainstorms in the district.

“This is what President Lazarus Chakwera wanted when he declared a State of National Disaster in January, appealing for humanitarian support from international and local donors,” he said.

Matola also called for unity among Malawians to enable donors help those affected by disasters.

Darussunnah Foundation director Sheikh Ismail Allan said they responded to Chakwera’s appeal for help.

“So, we got resources from the Muhammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Global Initiative of the United Arab Emirates for the donation,” he said.
