A Shurugwi woman, Chiedza Tototai, has been remanded in prison after allegedly pouring hot cooking oil on her husband, Shepherd Gwenzi, during a dispute.

Tototai, facing domestic violence charges, claimed in court that the incident was accidental, stating she was boiling oil to bake buns when it spilled.

The court questioned how the pot reached the bedroom since the kitchen and bedroom are separate buildings.

Magistrate Sithabile Zungula ordered Tototai’s remand, while Prosecutor Kwanele Njini confirmed the incident occurred on May 4, 2024.

Gwenzi suffered burns to his face and upper body and is currently hospitalized at Shurugwi District Hospital.
