A 49-year-old man from Chazanga compound in Lusaka has divorced his wife of 20 years for sharing food with their neighbours. George Phiri filed for divorce against Tanta Zulu, aged 34, before the Matero Local Court.

Phiri claimed that his wife had a habit of giving away food meant for their children to their neighbours. He accused Zulu of being insensitive towards the needs of their own children.

In her defense, Zulu told the court that her husband was stingy and controlling. She said that he would measure the food in the house before leaving and would beat her if he found out that she had cooked without his permission.

Magistrate Harriet Mulenga presided over the case and noted that the reasons for the couple’s divorce were baseless. She urged the couple to reconcile for the sake of their children. However, the marriage was terminated.
