World Vision installs potable water in Dowa

World Vision Malawi has installed a solar-powered water system in Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa to promote water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) services in the district.

The piped-water system comprises five kiosks in villages, at Kayembe Trading Centre and at Kayembe Primary School.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Vaida Jameson, a community member from Chinavinga Village, said potable water will help people observe hygiene.

She said: “The availability of piped water will enhance hygiene, thereby creating a conducive atmosphere for children to live.

“Previously, we used to draw water from boreholes, also drilled by World Vision. We are pleased to have piped water now.”

A water users association member Saulos Kautsa said businesspeople at Kayembe Trading Centre are also benefitting from the potable water.

“To effectively run businesses, especially restaurants, people need clean water to wash their utensils and prepare healthy meals,” he said.

Kayembe Primary School head teacher Exmus Chakale said the kiosk is providing fresh water to learners at the institution.

“There is a borehole near the school, but its water is salty; hence, it is not helpful. However, the kiosk is providing us with fresh water,” he said.

Senior Chief Kayembe thanked World Vision Malawi for installing kiosks in her area.

She said: “My subjects now access potable water, thanks to World Vision. Women no longer have to queue to get water at a borehole as the kiosks have increased water access.

“I urge communities to take good care of the facilities.”

World Vision Dowa District manager Arnold Tsalayekha said the organisation implemented the project in Lipiri Area Programme to ensure children have improved Wash facilities.

“We want to ensure that no child suffers from waterborne diseases due to drinking unsafe water,” he said.

The water system was funded by World Vision New Zealand.
