Women in the fisheries sector need support

Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Honorable Eisenhower Mkaka, on Monday launched the Malawian chapter of African Women Fish Processors and Traders Network (AWFISHNET).

Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe, Mkaka said the chapter will enhance connections among women in the sector enabling them to communicate and collaborate with each other.

“This network will provide a platform for women fish processors, traders and fish farmers to share best practices, experiences, technologies and learning together; advocate for issues affecting them,” he said.

He said the network will facilitate policy enabling environment to enhance their role in the fisheries and aquaculture sub-sectors.

The network is also meant to strengthen the women’s role as Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), hence expand their business and marketing opportunities.
