A 34-year-old woman in Mwanza, Seketina Josiah, has been convicted and ordered to pay a fine of K400,000 or serve a one-year jail term for illegal possession of foreign currency.
Police spokesperson Hope Kasakula reported that the court heard the woman was found with 10,000 Meticals and 7,220 South African rands at the Mwanza border while on route to South Africa.
She lacked the necessary supporting documents for the foreign currency, leading to her apprehension by fiscal police officers.
The suspect pleaded guilty in court, and the first-grade magistrate, Gladstone Chilundu, imposed the fine as a deterrent to potential offenders.
