Community members from Traditional Authority (T/A) Mduwa in Mchinji District have commended New Apostolic Church Relief Organisation for installing solar-powered water system in the area.

In random interviews on Tuesday during a media tour of the area, they said potable water will enhance their personal hygiene and sanitation.

Village head Chisomphayani said previously, his subjects used to drink water from unprotected sources.

“The village is located about 50 kilometres from Mchinji Boma, but we have piped water courtesy of New Apostolic Church Relief Organisation,” he said.

The chief urged his subjects not to vandalise pipes, adding that he will engage other traditional leaders to form committees to take care of water facilities.

New Apostolic Church Relief Organisation project officer Felistus Magombo said with funding from Germany-based Nak-Karitativ, they have installed eight water points in eight villages in the area.

He said: “We are reaching out to about 2 495 people with clean water.

“In addition, we have drilled six boreholes fitted with afridev hand pumps. Out of this figure, four boreholes have been allocated to the community, one to a primary school and another to a church.”

Mchinji District water officer Mike Chilimmadzi said the project is complementing government’s effort to provide access to clean water.

“The organisation is increasing people’s access to safe water, thereby promoting sanitation in the district,” he said.

New Apostolic Church Relief Organisation is implementing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project to the tune of K300 million.
