Veteran boxers Osgood ‘The Punisher’ Kayuni and Wilson ‘Shasha’ Masamba are set to renew their rivalry on October 17 at Robin’s Park in Blantyre, six years after they last fought.
The bout has been organised by Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions and the winner will receive K500 000 while the loser will get K400 000.
To face off for the third time: Masamba (L) and Kayuni
In an interview yesterday, promoter of the fight Mike ‘Bangwe 1’ Chitenje said they have organised the fight to turn back the hands of time when the two were top boxers on the domestic scene.
He said: “At the peak of their careers, the two were the undisputed top boxers who enjoyed a huge following and as they are at the twilight of their careers, we thought it wise to take boxing fans down memory lane.
“This will probably be the last time that they will face each other and it will be the bout of the year.”
The self-proclaimed Malawi’s ‘Don King’ said the two will fight in super lightweight and the charges are K2 000 all-round.
The two Malawi Defence Force boxers have met three times and Kayuni emerged the winner, twice on points and once on technical knockout.
But in an interview yesterday, Masamba said this will be payback time.
He said: “Let me thank Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions for giving me this opportunity to silence Kayuni. He is way past his prime and he won’t stand the heat.”
On his part, Kayuni said it is time Masamba accepted the harsh reality that they are not in the same class.
He said: “Masamba is a baby. I have beaten him three times and this time I will be out to finish him off. I urge the fans to come in their large numbers to watch the bout of their lives.”
Ironically, both boxers are 37. Masamba’s record stands at 45 wins, five losses and two draws while Kayuni boasts 26 wins seven losses and two draws.
Meanwhile, Chitenje has said asocial bout between him and fellow Bangwe Township resident Isaac Jomo Osman will spice up the event.
“I hope Jomo is preparing wherever he is to avoid the unthinkable. I don’t want him to end up in casualty ward,” he said.
