Vendors and Market Users in Liwonde Accuse Council of Neglecting Waste Management

Vendors and market users in Liwonde are accusing the council of neglecting its responsibility to remove waste within market spaces.

According to one vendor, Abdul Waluza, a lot of vendors have been contracting cholera due to the council’s failure to manage waste, despite vendors paying market fees on a daily basis.

He claims that vendors have been requesting the council to remove the waste, but the council has not taken any action.

In addition to the overflowing waste in the market spaces, vendors also want the council and companies to stop dumping waste into a small river that is used by people downstream.

Machinga District Council Spokesperson Martin Chiwanda promised to provide an explanation for the council’s failure to act, but has yet to do so.
