During the march, youngsters were seen beating drums while others blew wind instruments or whistled in jubilation.

UTM Party secretary general Patricia Kaliati, who was in attendance, confirmed that the gathering was a celebration of the discharge of Chilima, who is the party’s president, but refused to give further details.

She said: “We are celebrating that the Right Honourable Saulos Chilima has won the court case. If you want an interview, there is going to be another time for that, but today we are very happy and thanking our God.”

The High Court of Malawi Financial Crimes Division on Monday discharged Chilima from a corruption case that dates back to 2022.

Judge Redson Kapindu issued the order in Lilongwe following a certificate of discontinuance Director of Public Prosecutions Masauko Chamkakala made on May 3 2024.
