Use of unskilled workers hampering efforts to boost Tourism industry

Authorities have said that the use of unskilled workers is hampering efforts to boost the tourism industry in the country.

This was said as tourism stakeholders have convened in Lilongwe for a pre-lab aimed at identifying and overcoming obstacles hindering the sector’s growth and potential.

Chancy Simwaka, Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, highlighted the importance of addressing the lack of skilled workers in the sector.

He also added that he is concerned about the poor transportation infrastructure and high cost of air tickets, which make the country an expensive destination for tourists.

Dr. Janet Banda, SC, Head of PDU and Deputy Secretary to the President and Cabinet, is hopeful that the pre-lab meeting will provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and find innovative solutions to the barriers preventing the tourism industry from reaching its full potential.
