Update; Police Return PIJ Equipment

Malawi Police Service (MPS) have returned the equipment belonging to Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ).

PIJ Investigations Director, Golden Matonga has confirmed the development; saying they now return to work.

“Our equipment has been returned to us. We now return to work,” Faceofmalawi quotes PIJ’s Facebook post.

PIJ Executive Director and investigative journalist, Gregory Gondwe was arrested yesterday and reportedly forced to reveal his source of information on a story that government paid K1.3 billion for a business belonging to businessman and corruption suspect, Zuneth Sattar.

This is despite the contract in question, and several others, still being under a restriction order by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for possible investigation.

Different stakeholders called for immediate release of Gondwe and the return of their equipment.
