Update; Chizuma nabbed over leaking audio

Martha Kaukonde, lawyer for Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Martha Chizuma said her client has been arrested in connection with the case of the leaked audio.

In January this year, Chizuma received backlash after an audio of a phone call between her and unknown person discussing work related matters went viral on social media.

Following the development, a Mzuzu resident Frighton Phombo went to court and opened a case against Chizuma for violating the Corrupt Practices Act (CPA) by revealing to a third party information on United Kingdom-based businessperson Zuneth Sattar, who is under investigation for corruption.

In its ruling a senior magistrate court ordered the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate a leaked audio involving Chizuma.

While confirming that the police have Chizuma in their custody, national police spokesperson Peter Kalaya did not give much details on Chizuma’s arrest.

Kalaya said more information will be given in due course to the public.

Kaukonde said that she was told that her client was arrested and is being detained at National Police headquarters at Area 30 but the officer expressed ignorance on the matter.

At the moment Chizuma is being kept at Namitete Police station.
