Two people handed five years jail sentence for robbery

Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has ordered two men to serve a five year jail term for robbery.

Kawale Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mabvuto Phiri said the two are Kennedy Makuwa, 37, and Henod Buluku, 33.

“State Prosecutor Sub Inspector, Brenda Namanja Livasoni told the court that the duo, on May 7, 2022 hired Patrick Isaac’s motorbike at upper Biwi route to the dumping site in area 24 where they robbed him of cellphone and money amounting to K18, 000 but failed to rob him the motorbike.

“The victim did not report the matter to Police but after some weeks the same people approached the victim at Winners Chapel with the same trick, posing as customers,” he explained.

The victim recognised them and put them on hold as he sought Police intervention at Kawale who arrested the suspects. They were found with pepper spray, a knife and ropes during search.

Appearing in court the two pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency citing age and being first offenders.

The State pleaded for harsh penalty arguing that the case was well organised and that such cases are at an increasing rate hence the five year jail term as a deterrent to other would be offenders.

Makuwa comes from Senzani Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Phambala and Buluku is from Damison Village, TA Makwangwala both in Ntcheu District.
