Two Killed in Chikwawa Road Crash Involving Stationary Vehicle

Two individuals tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Chikwawa, Malawi. The deceased have been identified as Hawa Wakati, an adult from Jombo, and Prosper Chidatha, a five-year-old child from Chipakuza Village, both under Traditional Authority Lundu in Chikwawa District.

According to Chikwawa Police Public Relations Officer Dickson Matemba, the incident occurred during the night of May 14, 2023, at a location known as Thom along the Ngabu Chikwawa M1 road. The accident involved a Toyota Dyna driven by Douglas Redson, aged 38, from Chipakuza Village. The vehicle was carrying approximately 30 passengers who had attended a football match. It collided with a stationary lorry loaded with bales of cotton.

The collision resulted in both Hawa Wakati and Prosper Chidatha sustaining severe head injuries. They were immediately rushed to St. Montfort Hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The driver of the parked lorry fled the scene after the accident. Police are currently conducting a search for him, and once apprehended, he will face charges of causing death by reckless driving.
