Trainers warned against sexually exploiting newly recruited police officers

Trainers in the country’s police training schools have been warned against sexually exploiting newly recruited police officers.

According to the Commissioner of Police responsible for Training and Human Resource at Malawi Police Service, Happy MKandawire, the vice undermines one of the MPS’ pillars of instilling discipline.

“Whether in police training schools or at the stations, sexual harassment is a very big problem. It erodes the discipline that we always cherish. When we all stand on discipline, we will perform well as a police service,” said Mkandawire.

Commenting on the development, Deborah Banda, Deputy Director for Gender and Women’s Rights at Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) commends the adoption of sexual harassment policies in all workplaces as a way of dealing with the vice.

Complimenting the development, MHRC, in collaboration with Women Lawyers Association, organised a day-long workshop for police officers on sexual harassment.
