National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) acting executive director Kondwani Santhe has commended Thyolo District Council for improving its financial management.

The improvement is an opportunity for the council to access the 2021/22 Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) funds.

Santhe: We are satisfied

Thyolo was among four out of the 28 district councils which missed out on Gesd funds disbursed through the World Bank’s Performance Based Grants due to alleged poor financial management in 2020.

Speaking on Tuesday when he visited the district council, Santhe said he was satisfied with the council’s progress on its account books as it has now scored 62 percent from 40 percent in 2020.

“But this is the first phase of our assessment. The last assessment will be in mid-January which is the audit phase,” he said.

Thyolo District Council vice-chairperson Chiuta Wa Chiuta said the council will do its best to ensure that it accesses the Gesd funds.

“We were affected last year when we failed to secure the funds due to poor performance and this affected the implementation of projects in the district,” he said.

Chiuta said the council was expected to receive K560 million if it is successful after the audit.
