The Association of Malawians in Ireland through Chikwawa Diocese has donated clothes and shoes to survivors of tropical storms Ana and Gombe in Chikwawa District.

Speaking on Monday in a telephone interview from Ireland, the association’s president Henry Mkumbira Phiri said they delayed to send the relief items due to logistical challenges.

“After receiving a letter from Father Matthews Semba requesting for relief items, we mobilised resources worth K9 million from Malawians based in Ireland to respond to the situation,” he said.

Phiri said this is not the first time to respond to disasters in Chikwawa as in 2021 they donated about K1.4 million to help fight Covid-19.

“We are currently constructing a K4 million house for an old woman in Mangochi District,” he said.

On her part, Chikwawa Diocese Office directorate, human resources and administrative officer Rosatta Lemani thanked the association for the donation.

“Despite the survivors relocating upland, they need many things, including clothes and food as they lost almost everything to floods,” she said.

Lemani appealed to other well-wishers to support the survivors with food and farm inputs.

In Chikwawa at least 86 944 households were affected by both tropical storms Ana and Gombe.
