China-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga has won the Chinese Superleague golden boot with 10 goals.
Her feat comes five months after she inspired her club Wuhan Jiangda to win the Chinese National Cup in which she also won the top scorer award with six goals.
Chawinga: I feel great
The Wuhan prolific forward has followed in the footsteps of her sister Tabitha, who won it three times before her loan move to Italian Serie A Women’s giants Inter Milan in August this year.
In an interview yesterday, the Scorchers prolific forward said she is excited to have put an icing on the cake after inspiring her team to a third successive league title.
Said the 24-year-old: “It’s the first time I have won the league golden boot and I can’t hide my excitement although the priority was to help my team defend the title.
“It really has been a fantastic season for me and I feel great.
“Credit to my team-mates, coaches and fans because without them, I couldn’t have done it.”
Temwa has achieved the feat despite Wuhan losing both their last two games to Jiangsu Suning 1-0 and Shanghai Shengli 3-2 in which she scored the vital goal that won her the top scorer award.
Nevertheless, despite the two defeats, Wuhan had already sealed the title in the 10-team league.
They have finished the league with 45 points, six points above runners-up Jiangsu.
Temwa pipped joint runner-up top scorers Yuan Cong of Shangdong and Wirigumula who scored nine goals apiece.
Her sister Tabitha finished fourth with eight goals despite moving to Italy half way the season.
Temwa also inspired Wuhan to win the Chinese Women’s National Cup when she scored a double in the 3-0 win over Beijing in the final.
She also won the tournament’s golden boot with six goals.
Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu said Temwa’s exploits underline that Malawi has talented players.
“We are delighted that Temwa is the top goal scorer in China. Her dominance of the Chinese women’s football league is admirable. We are proud of her exploits. This is no mean feat. It demonstrates that women’s football in Malawi has talent,” he said.
