Teacher and Girlfriend Nabbed Over Fake Currency Scandal in Phalombe

In Phalombe Police are keeping in custody a 31-year-old Primary School Teacher, Elliot Kapita and his girlfriend Agnes Tung’ande, 25, for being found in possession of fake Malawian banknotes amounting to K285,000.

It reported that, the duo who stay in Mulanje district on December 19, 2023 went to Phalombe on some errands.

Upon arrival at Phalombe Trading Centre, they approached an Airtel Money Agent and asked him to deposit a sum of K160,000 to Airtel money account.

After the transaction was successful, the latter produced K160,000 cash in 5000 notes to the agent who immediately discovered that the notes were fake.

The matter was reported to Phalombe Police Station who rushed to the scene and arrested the culprits.

After being searched the duo were found with extra 25 (K5000 notes) bearing AR 1459113-17, AR1459114-12, AR 1459116-13 and AR 1459117-15 serial numbers.

Meanwhile, investigations are still in progress to trace the source of the counterfeit currency.

The duo will appear in court to answer charges of found in possession of fake currency.

Kapita hails from Kholiyo village, Traditional Authority Nkhumba in the district while Tung’ande comes from Mpangowalimba village, Traditional Authority Makhuwira, in Chikwawa district.
