Tabitha Chiwinga back home, calls for support for women football

Celebrated Malawi women’s national football team captain Tabitha Chawinga received a heroic welcome for her historic exploits in Italy where she won women’s football golden boot accolade with 23 goals.

She is the first African player to win the award.

Tabitha, who was playing for Inter Millan on loan from Chinese side, Wuhan City, was welcomed by thousands of people at the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe.

Speaking after welcoming the star, Deputy Minister of Water and sanitation Liana Kakhobwe Chapola, who also represented President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera, hailed Chawinga for setting the standards saying the First Couple is overjoyed with her exploits which is a big motivation factor for upcoming players and women’s football in the country.

Meanwhile, Tabitha says she will have discussions with her parent club Wuhan and her manager on the way forward as she has attracted interests from top European women football clubs like Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Arsenal and Chelsea.
