Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation programmes manager Gomezgani Mhango has asked Karonga District Council to continue providing technical support to youth clubs on sexual and reproductive health services.
She said this on Tuesday during the District Executive Council meeting where she announced the completion of their 18-month project.
Mhango said the project increased the intake of modern family planning methods to 1 000 adolescent girls and boys in Chitipa and Karonga districts.
She said: “The project also created awareness on sexual and reproductive health, mobilised parents, community leaders and youths to advocate for youth-friendly health services.
Mhango: Youths accessed contraceptives
“We reached 14 000 youths with comprehensive sexual education.”
Mhango said the project also improved social behaviour change communication on multimedia platforms to create demand for youth-friendly health services.
However, she said despite all that, there are challenges such as unavailability of youth-friendly health services in health centres.
In an interview, Karonga district youth officer Lapken Liwago said his office is always committed to making sure that the youth access sexual and reproductive health services.
He said: “We are sad that the project has phased out. However, let me assure the organisation that we are always committed and we will intensify monitoring youth clubs on their activities related to sexual and reproductive health issues.
“Additionally, we will continue appealing to the health sector and office-bearers to institute youth-friendly health structures in health facilities across the district.”
Liwago has since appealed for support from other partners on the need to provide outreach services in hard-to-reach areas.
Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation was implementing Wanangwa Wane Project in Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga District with funding from Breuckmann Foundation and German Government’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation Development.
