Suspected thief killed by angry mob in Chitipa

Angry people in the area of Senior Chief Mwenewenya in Chitipa District, have on Monday, killed a man on suspicion that he robbed a businessperson of K6 million and a motorcycle.

Confirming the incident, Spokesperson for Chitipa Police Station, Sub-Inspector Gladwell Simwaka said the deceased, identified as James Mwalilino, together with two friends, attacked and robbed a man and his son at Jembya, which is along Chitipa-Nthalire road.

“The man Tiyegze Kaira and his son were on their way to Chitipa and upon reaching Jembya, the deceased and his two friends, 25-year-old Astone Ng’ambi and 24-year-old Luka Kanyika attacked them and robbed them of K6 million and a King Lion motorcycle,” Simwaka said.

Simwaka said the victims informed their relatives, who later mobilized themselves and ended up apprehending the suspects.

He said when police officers from Wenya Police Unit rushed to the scene, they managed to rescue two suspects, but unfortunately Simwaka died as a result of being heavily assaulted by the angry mob.

The victim hailed from Mwangolera village in the area of Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga District.
