Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says the issue of proposed gate revenue cut review is a policy matter that requires a meeting involving all stakeholders.

The flagship football league’s general secretary Williams Banda said this in an interview on Thursday in reaction to a Facebook post by Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson Sunduzwayo Madise that Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Sulom cannot be getting a separate share from Super League matches  “because they are one entity’ at law”.

He said: “It’s a matter of policy that requires  meeting  and engagement  [involving] Sports Council, Football Association of Malawi and  Sulom. Teams have always demanded  it.”

But FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda said he could not comment because they are not friends with Madise on social media.

“I assume he was posting it for his friends on social media, otherwise if council plans to take it up officially, then we will wait,” he said.

On whether Sports Council plans to take up the issue officially, Madise said: “We will wait and see if FAM and Sulom will address the concerns that Super League teams have been lodging for a long time.

“We would rather allow them some margin of appreciation so they can resolve it as a family [a mother and her eldest son]. Of course, if we see that nothing is happening, we naturally will step in. Hopefully, we will not be accused, once again, of interference.”

Clubs’ concerns on gate revenue sharing resurfaced on Sunday after the TNM Super League Blantyre derby between FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, which fetched K67.7 million and the clubs got K13.9 million each.

In an interview, Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga said: “Out of K67 million, you cannot get K13 million, this needs serious restructuring.”

On his part, Wanderers acting chief executive officer Roosevelt Mpinganjira said the clubs are getting a raw deal.

He said: “The review should have been done on Thursday. FAM and Sulom are indeed the same entity and for Sunday’s match, half the amount which they got could have boosted the teams’ coffers.”
