Striking ESCOM workers give management 14 days ultimatum

Workers at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) in Blantyre have given their management 14 days to implement a 44 percent salary increment, failing which they will take unspecified action.

A fleet of more than 10 vehicles carrying Escom workers union members blocked Blantyre’s Victoria Avenue this morning as the employees, chanting songs and carrying placards, presented their petition to the company’s senior management.

In response, Escom director of human resources and administration Crispin Banda said management will revert with a response once discussions on the matter are finalised.
