Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara joins Malawians in demanding apology from BBC

Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara has joined Malawians in demanding BBC World Service to apologise to Malawi for their Tuesday Focus on Africa program.

The program insinuated that, Malawi as a poor country its citizens don’t have to reward each other with gifts.

This was in reaction to President Lazarus Chakwera’s pledge that when Malawi qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 he will reward the players with 1 million Kwacha each.

In the program, Government Spokesperson Gospel Kazako called the remarks by the BBC focus on Africa host as imperialist and colonial.

Writing on her official facebook page Hara has asked BBC to unconditionally apologize to Malawians for the remarks.

“BBC News Africa, you are a disgrace! You owe us an apology!,” wrote Gotani Hara.

Meanwhile, Malawians are camping at every post belonging to BBC Service and BBC Africa.
