Salima youths benefit from Public Works Programme

Youths in Salima District have commended the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme for improving their livelihoods.

Speaking after receiving her wages for Cycle Three of the programme at Ngodzi in Senior Chief Kambalame on Friday, Amina Maulana, 20, praised the programme for making her self-reliant after working in all the three cycles.

She said she joined a village savings and loans group where she saved enough money to start selling secondhand clothes.

“Working under this programme has improved my life. Through the business, I am able to buy necessary items such as clothes, help my parents with groceries and sometimes relish,” said Maulana.

Another participant, Joseph Chituwire, 27, from Chenkhumba Village in Senior Chief Kambalame, said he is now a productive and responsible citizen after being enrolled into the programme.

“We felt neglected for a long time because most programmes were centred on the elderly and children, but in this one we have been considered,” he said.

Salima district acting youth officer Samuel Chimwaza said unemployment is one of the biggest challenges. He, therefore, said having programmes that incorporate the youth to earn an income is commendable.

“Most of the youth, after receiving the wages for a while, saved and started smallscale businesses, making them self-reliant. This assists them to become responsible citizens who are contributing to the development of the district,” said Chimwaza.

Salima District Council is disbursing wages for Cycle Three of the programme in 16 catchments are implementing different projects in environmental restoration and management.
