Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Sacco) in the Northern Region have teamed up to construct a K6.8 million fence around St. Mary’s Primary School Resource Centre in Nkhata Bay.
The school has 22 learners with different disabilities who lodge on campus.
Speaking on Saturday after launching the donation of construction materials, Northern Region Saccos chairperson Sanderson Nyambwani said they embarked on the project following a request from the school.

“We will construct a fence to protect the learners, especially those with albinism, from attacks,” he said.
On the call for food, Nyambwani said they will go back to the drawing board to discuss the way forward.
The school’s head teacher Geoffrey Kayange commended the Northern Region Saccos for the initiative.
However, he complained that the school receives little government funding.
“At times, we close the school term earlier due to lack of food,” said Kayange.
He, therefore, appealed to well-wishers to support the school with food.
At the event, well-wishers contributed K40 000 for the day’s learners’ meals.
