Malawi Red Cross Society has launched a cash transfer initiative targeting 5 901 families affected by tropical storms Ana and Gombe in Phalombe, Nsanje, Chikwawa and Salima districts.
The beneficiaries will each receive K80 000 to enable them to reconstruct their shelters.
Speaking on Tuesday at Bereu Camp in Chikwawa during the launch of the initiative, Malawi Red Cross Society director of programmes Prisca Chisala appealed to other stakeholders to support the survivors.

“Although we got support from donors to help the survivors, there is still much work to be done on the ground,” she said.
Department of Disaster Management Affairs deputy director Peter Chimangeni commended Malawi Red Cross Society for their continued help to the survivors.
“While other organisations stopped helping the survivors, Malawi Red Cross Society is still reaching out to them with different interventions,” he said.
Chimangeni said government will start distributing food in October to families affected by the storms.
Bereu Camp chairperson Anderson Nekita said the money will help survivors to reconstruct their homes.
Malawi Red Cross Society is implementing the initiative with funding from Danish Red Cross, International Federation of the Red Cross, Crescent Society and the International Organisation for Migration.
