Rampahosa says six countries to join Brics bloc

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announces that the Brics bloc will welcome six new members from early next year: Ethiopia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Argentina and Iran.

The membership will take effect from January 1 2024.

The debate over expanding the Brics bloc – made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – has topped the agenda at the summit in Johannesburg.

There have been divisions about whether expansion now is the best move.

The group wants to gain more influence in the world.
